Your First Karate Lesson and what to Expect

I remember my first time coming to the dojo, all of eight years old and very shy towards new people. To my shock, everyone was very friendly and open to my questions. Before I even realized it, I was laughing and joking along with them. I felt unbelievably welcomed. When I was shown around the family-oriented dojo, I got to watch some cool older kids performing amazing kicks and punches and having a fun time as they did so. I wanted to be just like them. Before I knew it, I was signed up for my first lesson and couldn’t wait to come back.

When first walking into Buzz Durkin’s karate school, you can expect to be greeted by one of the school’s skilled black belt instructors. They have years of martial arts experience and are trained in both mind and body. After introductions, you may be given a tour of the building and learn about the school’s history and traditions. You will get to see where students of all ages practice their karate. Your first visit will answer many questions you have of what to expect at Buzz Durkin’s karate school.

Your first lesson will involve an introduction to martial arts and more specifically, an introduction to the style of Uechi Ryu karate. The traditional Okinawan style of Uechi Ryu is rich with history and culture and is an integral part of the dojo. Before going through some punches or kicks, the instructor may ask some questions about your prior experience with martial arts (if you have any), or just some questions about your daily life. Our instructors are very open minded and interested in who you are as a person.

Some of the moves practiced during your first lesson will include basic strikes, such as punches and kicks, basic blocks, and the introduction to the style of Uechi Ryu karate. Before leaving your first lesson, you will have learned something new – something that could help you defend yourself if you ever needed to.
